RHDN Problems

Hi Nightcrawler,

I would normally send this on RHDN, in the "Site Talk" forum, but that didn't work.  I couldn't PM there either.  Something wrong with session management/forum authentication:

- When I try to "mark all messages as read" in the forums, I am getting the following error message:
"Session verification failed. Please try logging out and back in again, and then try again."

- So I try to log out, and I get the same message.

- So I go to the extreme measure of manually deleting cookies to force a logout, then I log in freshly as requested, and....  the entire same thing happens all over again.

- So I try to post a message in the forums, and I get:
"Your session timed out while posting. Please try to re-submit your message."

- So I try to send a PM, and get the same message.

...So I finally came here to tell you.  Sorry for the roundabout approach, but I couldn't think of a better way to get the information to you.

This has only started happening in the past 24 hours or so.

The server crashed and took the database session table with it. It should be fixed now. In the future, I think you should still be able to use the contact staff form, even under those conditions. If that page didn't work, it would be because the entire site doesn't work and I would probably notice that in due time! ;D

I tried to register there yesterday and had problems with the verification.  maybe I'll try again today.

Nightcrawler

I saw your name in the new account log today, it should have gone through now.

Yup, works fine now.
I suspect that the "contact staff" form may not have worked either... but I'll keep that in mind ofr next time.

Thanks !

Yeah, everything worked out fine and I'm in now.

Meaning no disrespect, as we all do this as a hobby and I for one greatly appreciate the work you do on RHDN, but...

You really need to bitch out your host. This is what, the third week in a row with extended downtime? :|

I hear that!!  no disrespect is tright, and - as a board Admin on a different site myself, I well appreciate the amount of work that goes into it, and my hat's off in respect to anyone else who does it.

BUT....you're paying your host MONEY...for that kind of crap service, not good.  I'd rip my hosting company a new one if I got such terrible service, considering that I pay for the hosting.

If I were you, I threaten to move on them if they do not straighten up their act...and demand a discount for such lousy service.  You can keep your same domain and all content when moving to a new host.  I have done it before.

Sometimes, it's not them. It's just something waiting for attention from me that I am unaware of when I may be sleeping, at work, or out. There a few dozen things that can go wrong with a server at any given time. :P

When it is fault of the host, I fight with them regularly and have gotten discounts at times. They couldn't care less. We have changed hosts a few times and we will likely change again when our contract is up. You guys have to understand that few people will provide us the hardware and bandwidth we need for the site at the price we get it at. You get what you pay for in life and you get some sub-par hosting service in the price range we are at. I am not willing to pay any more for the site at present time.

Also remember, moving servers is a real time sink and a pain. It takes quite a few hours to provision and configure a LAMP server, move the site files, sync the two, and switch.

If you have any hosting options that will provide us with 1.5Ghz/1GB RAM/60GB HD/850GB bandwidth/ for $21/month or better, I'd be happy to look at them. Ideally, we'd like to do better as we make several compromises to run within our limits as is. You'll find available options are few at this price range.

You could try DailyRazor.com  That's who I have my game site Legend of the Green Dragon with.  They have been pretty good for me, and the price is fairly good too.

Nightcrawler

They are 2-3x more expensive for the hosting options we need.

Oh well, sorry.  They work out for my needs, thought maybe it might work for you.  You get what you pay for, though.
