Just saw this at Zophar's... Anyone heard anything about this place?

7:21:  I would like to announce the creation of a new, hopefully long-lasting romhacking resource. I'm going to keep this brief and simply post their message on the wiki main page:


   "Prior to the founding of datacrystal.org, the ROM hacking community was largely decentralized. Information on any one game would be buried in nested folders on forgotten websites. Hackers toying with games lacking sufficient fanbase would have nowhere to put their findings, and as such, the ROM hacking community as a whole could not grow. Datacrystal.org is now available to all hackers as a community to share information. If you have the greatest or the smallest finding about whatever game you like to hack, add it to the site. As the community grows, datacrystal.org will become the repository of all known hacking information."


You may want to review the "About" and "Help" pages before modifying or adding data. Although ambitious in scope, this is still an early evolving effort. That said, I would like to invite any and all romhackers to help contribute if you feel so inclined and have data handy

Well, they're not doing a very good job at making it the center for ROM hacking...It's just a Wiki, and there's not much there to boot...

i guess in one way it'd be nice to have a place to permanently store tricks and tips.. like the old sram trick to figure out font tables. start a game with the name set to all of one character on one save slot, start another game on another slot with the the name set to all of another leter. compare the two saves look for four or eight bytes in a row that are the same. stuff like that that not every new hacker would think of trying as a last resort or something.

A wiki is just a heap of textfiles thrown together, the new site will be a center for a whole community  

But a small dictonary page with short explanations on common romhacking terms as NC suggested in some other thread (I think  ) is a good idea

Just to clear things up.. Datacrystal.org is not my project, I have no affiliation with the project. I simply heard about the site and felt that it could turn out okay if enough people end up contributing and felt like posting about it. If nothing else, it will be a nice excuse for me to format and upload some of my FF1 NES notes.

Sure, but I think the dynamic and collaberative nature of a wiki works. I don't think the people over at datacrystal.org had meant their site to be a replacement for anything currently, or as a competitor to sites currently in developement. They're just addressing an issue of romhacking data storage that I think needs to be addressed. Whether it works or not... *shrugs*.
