It's been awhile since I played through any games. But I got around to finishing both StarTropics and StarTropics II over the past month . I never got to play them back in the NES era when they were new. StarTropics was OK. The story was hardly there. The gameplay was pretty fun, though I ended up having to use savestates because the game was pretty hard. I don't have the patience as an adult for restarting the level every time I die or accidentally jump into the water. All in all, the game was just enjoyable enough for me to finish. If you can still handle NES era games today, it's probably worth a play through. Now on to StarTropics II.

Thankfully the story was beefed up a bit for StarTropics II. I also liked the way the game was laid out with different time periods and generally shorter dungeons. I also enjoyed how you went back to C-island and the original musical tunes from the first game were remixed.  It seems they tweaked the game play mechanics for the better. You could now move diagonally and jumping and everything was a bit less clunky. I used cheats for this game too. It seemed a bit easier than StarTropics I, however it still had plenty of frustrating parts. I enjoyed Star Tropics II quite a bit overall. It was much improved over the first one. Savestates are probably a must though if you don't have patience. ;)

I don't know if I could pick up action RPGs that easily on the NES although if I did make a choice, I would pick Star Tropics since I beat the 2 Zeldas years ago when the graphics didn't seem so old.  I have played a lot of action RPGs for the SNES recently.  Maybe the graphics of those don't seems so old since I grew up in that generation.  I finished Illusion of Gaia and Soul Blazer along with a game called Gunman's Proof.  All turned out pretty well, I wish Enix would make some new Gaia games for the DS.

Ult, try out Crystalis. The gameplay is fast-paced, especially for an NES action/RPG. The story's surprisingly deep and meaningful, and is quite good (if you ignore the fact that the world was supposed to have ended on October 1, 1998 :p) Graphics are pretty good, too, and some of the bosses are *huge* for an NES game. We're talking quarter-of-the-screen huge.

Actually I did finish that game too, I completely forgot about that game when I was thinking of NES Action RPGs.  I agree with everything you said about Crystalis.  The graphics were pretty good for a NES game and I can still remember some of the music which wasn't bad either.  It was quite an involving world, ahead of its time definitely.
