Title: TransCorp Updates!
Post by Nightcrawler on Sep 30th, 2008 at 3:56pm
Main Page has been updated. Only one shiny new screenshot. I'm hoping to return some regular activity again now that I'm settled in my new house. Though homes truly are never ending projects! At least my ROM hacking projects have definable and achievable ends!

congratulations on a new home, once I graduate I hope to be looking for one too.  At least there are some people settling into new homes considering the stock market problems.

I never had enough assets to afford to have any in stocks. A few years ago, I did play around with some small time money in stocks and quickly learned how volatile the market can be. You can only play with money you can afford to loose. It takes money to make money.

With the money I did have, I choose to buy a house instead to end the awful apartment life and build an equity resource. You can always tap into your home's equity in emergencies or other reasons. Though all financial reasoning aside, having a quiet place to live where nobody infringes on my well being that I am in full control of was well worth the small fortune it cost to me!  :)

I also didn't buy a house outside my means (which here in NJ means a small older home) and of course have a traditional 30 year mortgage. So, I won't be a part of the foreclosure issues which are causing the economic crisis we are in.

So long as my fiancee and I keep employed, we'll be fine. :) It's smart to save up a nest egg as well to cover as a buffer for those times where the unexpected happens such as unemployment or some other problem. Working on that next. I've always had a good head on my shoulders when it comes to self management and finances.

Its good to here that your settled, I'm hoping to move too soon. Anyway Tenshi No Uta looks great, I'm hoping to play it one day. I'm a big fan of your work, it has a lot of quality.

Hey Nightcrawler don't you think it's about time for another TransCorp update? We have been in the new year for quite some time now and I always enjoy reading your witty and well thought out comments regarding romhacking as well as life in general.  A smart man once said "This old dog isn’t dead yet and passion for the hobby is as strong as ever." Princess has returned! Great to see old faces back in action here. :) Congratulations on Circle of Royalty status! You have joined the small group of elite TransCorpians contributing to the life blood stream of TransCorp! I believe you are now entitled to a custom title if you want one.

Yeah, we're certainly overdue for an update. I wanted to wait until there was more visible progress on the projects. Instead, I've been distracted with the Generic Script Dumper. I had to update my tools after I ran into some of the misc. text in Tenshi No Uta in so many different storage formats I didn't have tools available for.

At this stage in my ROM hacking career though I'm really into things such as my Universal VWF and now this script dumper as the "last ones" I ever make. What I mean by that is they are designed to be flexible enough to work for most all of my future needs. No need to write new VWF or script dumpers for future games. Realistically, I can't say I'd never have to write one again, but situations requiring it would be few and the changes minor. So, time invested in the tools is time well spent. Though it is a distraction/delay from the main tasks at hand.

I definitely have not lost my passion. Maybe my health, but not my passion! ;D I march forward slowly, but surely. I'm sure something nice will come to make you all proud at some point. :)

Ok. I've updated the main page with a snapshot of what's been going on with everything. I didn't realize I had so much to update about or I would have updated much sooner! I guess I'm not always what sure people are interested in reading about either. Sometimes I think some items might be uninteresting or not enough for the public, so I don't make a front page news item about them. Then I hoard and stockpile on news until I'm overflowing! I could have gone longer. I didn't even get to give many details!!

I hope all the time I'm spending on tools and universal approaches will pay in future rapid development and new projects. That's the idea anyway. I try to adapt to be as or more productive with less time because we all know the older you get, the less free time you have. So, I keep trying to get smarter about the way I do things.  8-)

They say with age comes wisdom. ;)

I'll try not to make it half a year before the next update! Though I'm sure those eagerly salivating on the latest and greatest visit the forum where news comes quicker in tinier bits.

The main page (always accessible from the forum by clicking the TransCorp logo) was updated with some new Herc4 screens and news! Too bad I run a flat file Perl based forum and a database driven PHP website. That makes it way too hard to make news posts automatically go the forum for discussion. I could always change out the forum to match, but I've grown attached to YaBB after all these years. It keeps us unique too as it lesser run software these days.

The GOH4 screens looked great Nightcrawler, hopefully the translator will pop back on the scene sometime.  How far did he/she get with the translation?

Title: Re: TransCorp Updates!
Post by Nightcrawler on Apr 8th, 2011 at 7:18am
Thanks. He got probably about 15% through the main script. Many translators underestimate the amount of work it actually is. I just don't get why people just disappear for months and can't be bothered to communicate, especially when they're working on a project together. A simple sentence or two could go a long way.

Title: Re: TransCorp Updates!

Your translator has his own Youtube channel and appears to be at least active in one aspect, so he hasn't disappeared completely.

Ask him then through Youtube? Better to know the hard facts than to potentially waste tons of hours waiting on a script that never comes.

I must say, TextAngel is looking mighty nice. Next you need to add support for custom (bitmap) font sets and window borders, so you can display the text exactly as it appears in-game!

Sorry to hear about the translator issues with the game.  What percentage of the script do you have translated roughly?  I noticed Ritchie did the FAQ for this game and he provided a lot of translation help on Burning Heroes, maybe you could check in and see how much he likes this game and if he has any translation notes from the game.

Title: Re: TransCorp Updates!
Post by Nightcrawler on Nov 23rd, 2011 at 10:34am
Gid, can you explain why that would be needed? Graphical abilities should not be necessary. If you set your line/window pixel widths and feed a VWF table, then the program can simply reflect those limits in the translated text and not allow you to exceed them. It could even be real time while you're trying to edit in the translation window. That's for manual formatting. I would also like to provide automatic formatting upon insertion. I guess I've just never seen what the value is providing some sort of game image preview other than being pretty visually as eye candy. I've never needed it in all my years personally.

For Heracles IV, only about 10% of the script was actually delivered to me. Any new translation effort should probably start from the beginning with the previous translation used as reference. They'll ensure the best results and consistent voice.

Ah, now see, I haven't really been following the utility. Pennywise mentioned it on IRC and I remembered seeing the screenshot in your news update, so I thought I'd chime in! But it sounds like you've got it sorted, so pay me no mind!

No, I appreciate the feedback. :) It was just an innocent question to you as a number of people seem to desire such a thing and I never understood it. The idea I laid out to you was simply my line of thinking of why it should be rendered unnecessary. TextAngel is very underdeveloped on the insertion side and currently does not do what I described, though I would certainly like to and plan to. If you think what I described would give equivalent functionality, that's great and I will stick to that plan. I just wanted to make sure it would as I really never understood the need for the graphical thing.

Even if equivalent, I'm sure many people would still like to see it anyway as a nicer visual presentation method. I would just put that at the bottom of the list as a would be nice to have, but not necessary option. At my current pace of work it would be years before I get to non necessary items! :D

This project is officially stalled. We have lost all translation support. So long as it doesn’t have any translation support, I’m going to let it sit for awhile to better focus on TextAngel and Tenshi No Uta. It’s a shame as the project had gained so much momentum. Well, if anybody wants to offer their translation services let me know, and we’ll see about starting things back up.

Just curious, but have you ever checked out Kruptar? A friend of mine uses it for all his projects and he really praises it. Might be useful if you're looking for different ways to handle things, ideas etc.

Title: Re: TransCorp Updates!
Post by Nightcrawler on May 29th, 2012 at 11:26am
I hadn't until today. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. :) There's some similar concepts employed. I spent an hour or so with it and it takes a lot of effort to get it to do anything of value. There's just no documentation it seems. The links in the readme are dead and Google searches turn up nothing. It's not open source either, so there are many options I have absolutely no idea what they do or are intended to do. I can at least take several ideas from it for consideration. On big deviation is it can only dump/insert to a single file and revolves around groupings. It also seems to require pointers for all strings and can't handle simple regions, although I can't be sure.

Does your friend read/write English? I'd be interested in finding out more.

Send aishsha message on RHDN and he'll give you a rundown of the tutorial. He'd probably be willing to explain how the program works as well.

Title: Re: TransCorp Updates!
Post by Nightcrawler on May 30th, 2012 at 9:40am
Thanks. I will. I don't see most of the windows the tutorial mentions when adding new items. It just adds them immediately and I have the raw properties to play with rather than the nice dialog boxes described and shown. I wonder if things are different between versions here.

In any event, TextAngel looks to accomplish much more and be more flexible. Such an ambitious scope is of course more time and work though. I'm currently working on a few things. The Atlas output need polishing. I discovered a bug in Atlas and needed assistance from Klarth to fix and clarify the extents of Atlas's capabilities in relation to TextAngel. I need to go back and fix it up now. In addition to that, there are still some regression bugs from moving to the project orientation as well as associated GUI validation. It lets you have full run of the house and doesn't validate enough. With the amount of features it has, it's easy to crash the thing regularly by inadvertently trying to do things that aren't allowed or invalid data. That's the kind of thing that's really holding it back from a small preview release. Since I constantly get hung up on logistics and user interface issues, I'm eager to get some kind of user feedback from a preview release so I can better firm up some of my design decisions. Unfortunately, the program is still very fragile because I changed my mind on the design too many times going backwards instead of forwards. Anyway, I'm working on it. :)

By the way? Thanks for putting the "Keep me logged in" button on this site and on RHDN *between* the password field and the okay button. Too many places don't do that, which means I have to tab PAST the damn login button, hit the space bar to keep me logged in, then shift-tab BACK to the damn login button: hassles that could easily be avoided by better UI design! So cheers :)

After finally getting back to some normalcy after Hurricane Sandy (which really kicked NJs butt), I remembered to update the main page here with a little bit about what's been going on over the last few months. Things are still moving forward, but it really seems like life stacks the deck against you. I always feel like I get going, take 5 steps forward, then life smacks me 4 steps back. Then, I get back to the 5th step, have to avoid a few smacks so I can get to the 6th step, then I get knocked back a few again.

The older I get, the more challenging it becomes. Life is frustrating. Unfortunately, I'm not wealthy enough to reduce my work schedule. That would sure help a lot. The old ticker is still beating though and I'm still putting one leg in front of the other. Being that it is Thanksgiving this week, I'll be thankful for that. :)

It seems like life is like that so much.  Do you live in New Jersey Nightcrawler?  I hope everything turned out alright with the hurricane.  I live in California and I always wonder, what is going to happen when that big earthquake happens.

Title: Re: TransCorp Updates!
Post by Nightcrawler on Nov 20th, 2012 at 8:59am
Yes, I live in NJ. I had a 9 day power outage, but otherwise made out much better than many others in the state. I was fortunate enough to not have any damage to my house. Luckily, I had several large trees near my house trimmed several weeks earlier that were an issue during major storms last year. I'm glad I did, I had no idea a hurricane would come a few weeks later!

So long as you survived the initial disaster, you'll make it through. Communities were trying hard to help each other. Shelters were up, free meals were being served, water, ice etc. was given out. I was actually pleasantly surprised at all that was being done out there for people helping one another in my local areas. And then starts the rebuilding process.

I can tell you it would be a good idea to have a relative or friend you can stay with, possibly for an extended period of time in the event you could not go back to your home. I can also tell you it's never a good idea to live near water or on the side of a mountain. In the past two years I've seen the rivers, lakes, and ocean flood out everything around and mudslides taking homes down the mountain.

The screenshots look great.  This definitely looks like it will be the best of the Heracles series.  The DS game was a surprise, but it was far too linear for my tastes.  The second and third game were pretty good but this looks even better.

Man, it has been dead around here on the forums. I'll have to do an update on RHDN soon and remind people about this place. I wanted to let everyone know I have lots going on right now with Heracles IV and some great new screenshots are almost ready with more finalized menus. There's also other happenings in some other associated projects, but I still need to get a few more things in place and get some time to do a proper write-up. So, rest assured things have been more active then they have been in a long time. I just haven't had proper time to do them justice writing about them.

I have spent all my time doing the work rather than writing about it.  ;D

Today we have the dreaded non-update update, a.k.a. the infamous 'I'm not dead' update on the main page. It's not worth reading unless you want to entertain yourself with my excuse train for no progress!

I don't usually like to post when there's nothing to post about, but there's a number of people whom still like to know I'm still alive and have not quit or anything like that. So, this one's for you!

There's still quite a bit of work to bring Heracles IV from alpha state to beta state, but I will get there. The 8x8 VWF menus cause all sorts of extra work because finalizing lengths of everything is a combination of character length, available VRAM allocation, and screen space in all used instances. I have to take a guess of a reasonable max characters, see how much VRAM max can be allocated, and check screen space. I have to find this out for every area of the game said menu text or items are used in. So, it turns out to be more of a time consuming trial and error or fine tuning process to get it all right.

Once these limits are at last all finalized, I need to work with the translator on trimming things that don't meet our finalized technical limitations. None of this is very fun work either so it's easy to procrastinate!  ;D

Title: Re: TransCorp Updates!

Yes, the end of road is finally drawing near for Heracles. I am excited as there hasn't been a TransCorp release in quite some time. I'm doubly excited because this one will be my greatest work yet! It will surely rival the best of them. It really pushes the boundaries this game engine to make the impossible possible for it. :)

Heracles did some things that made an 8x8 VWF very difficult.

  • They changed tilemap and tile base locations mid frame via HDMA. So, basically, they had two tile maps and double the tile space available to each background. They took advantage of much of that too.
  • The original game often entirely used up all vblank time in the NMI routine, and even overran in some cases!
  • Much more needs to be retained in VRAM than normal for all of those blasted HDMA scrolling menus to work because they utilize the full background layers including normally off-screeen areas that can be partially visible in various ways at any given time.

To do an 8x8 VWF, you need vblank time to transfer more tiles, and you need VRAM space to put them all in.  And it needs to be done in such a way that it works with the HDMA effects above.

It would be vastly simpler in nearly any other game...

Incredible the work you've been doing on Heracles 4. It sounds like it's going to be amazing when you've finished it! :)

Now to wait for the repros. :P :P (not endorsing it but it's bound to happen :(. I just thought that after seeing a few days ago some repromaker announcing Marvelous with date "TBA". And I know it's just because they need to wait for Dackr? to finish it before they can steal it and it's like... wow! ::)
Not going to name them but you buy can replacement GBA shells from them, with exotic names like 2000 Flushes. (where's that brick wall emoticon?)

Another exciting update has been posted on the main page as well as a few forum topics updates!

KingMike:
Repros can be made into a near non-existent problem if one chooses to do so. You can still do it in a way that is perfectly compatible with real hardware, flash carts, and emulators too. It's just a matter of select changes making any possible doner carts very rare, and make it too difficult/time consuming to create a new cart.

Awesome, can't wait for the release of Heracles 4. :) You guys thinking about any new projects apart from the ones you're already working on? Keep it up, kudos for all your hard work, it's highly appreciated. :)

The latest screenshots look great! I'm looking forward to both Heracles and and Tenshi. Hope your lung improves!

Thanks to you both.

I haven't been in a position to officially start any new projects in a long while. There are certainly a number of them I have in mind, however I have to think very carefully about the situation. It took so many years to finish the last few, I can't commit to any additional ones lightly. I may also have to rethink how I would do further projects (maybe open source or something) to ensure they could get completed and not be a ten year burden! ;D

Great stuff. Makes me want to start SNES hacking, but I know the hard work that goes into such beautiful hacks.

New projects are great and all (I could even make a few suggestions...), but perhaps you could revisit Wozz and redo the menu? IIRC, it's in a very abbreviated state and nothing like the quality of your current work.

Perhaps. I never really did the menus in Wozz to begin with. ChrisRPG was in charge of that. He kept stringing me along doing less and less, and never admitting he was abandoning work on it when I asked. Then, when all of my work was complete, he dropped a fat broken mess in my lap and ran.  >:( I then spent a few months just getting it to work. I then released it as I had no desire to start all that over. Sad tale really. I don't know if it had anything to do with his health issues or not. He was never honest with me. I really wish he would have told me the truth early on that he either couldn't or wouldn't do it... It would have turned out much differently. :(

Some years back, I almost did a quick expansion hack for it. I was going to leave the 8x8 in, but expanded the number of characters. Unfortunately, it didn't work out as a few of the menus had the screen too full to expand them in a meaningful way to accommodate it. I missed them in my initial feasibility study. Something to that effect. So, it never came to be.

There's always hope for improvement. However, that project left a bad taste in my mouth after the ChrisRPG stuff, so I have not been anxious to revisit.

What matters is that the last untranslated Heracles no Eikou game is getting a quality translation patch. 8-) Well, I bet there are many people who would gladly offer some help, so open-sourcing may not be a bad idea overall. In my experience, 'hiring' a few additional beta testers doesn't hurt either, as some people have fewer commitments and thus more free time than others (at least that's how things usually go as far as beta testing hacks and such goes). In this particular case, the end usually sanctifies the means. :)

Another update on the front page. Beta testing time! :)

We are looking for a few more testers. Anyone on the forum here interested (preferably having done beta testing before)?

Hey, I tested some games in the past, mostly RPGs (like Adventures of Musashi or Shadow Brain), but also strategy games (such as Vixen 357, I also did some spot translating/script editing in that case). I'd gladly help out with Heracles IV, looks like a cool game!

Glorious! Thank you so much! Fell out of my chair when I saw the news! Figured the very least I could do is register and applaud you for this momentous occasion. The time and dedication put into these games are mindblowing. Seeing your determination getting this over the finish line (and that goes for all your translations) is a truly inspiring quality and a humbling lesson that I could only hope to aspire to. So thank you for all your hard work! :)

Simply brilliant news. Nightcrawler - we are so proud of you. I'm an hour into the game and the quality of your work so far is stunning. What an incredible gift. In time it will go without saying that this game is available in English, but the truth is we had no right to expect it. This is a little miracle, brought about by generosity of spirit. I have no words - so emotional. Congratulations my friend :)

Completed it. The translation work was of the same quality as Dual Orb and Wozz. That's pretty much the biggest complement I could pay anyone in the rom hacking community. Simply brilliant.

I found a few small bugs and typos, but I can't figure out how to upload images on this board. Please PM me if you'd like the images and an explanation of the issues I encountered. Nothing major came up.

A very, very good game.

Just one thing: you may want to update the project page for GoH IV - every GoH game is now translated, which is amazing in itself. :) It's also interesting that each one of them was translated by a different team by and large!

Yes, I've edited it, thanks. Technically III and IV had the same translator even though they were done by two different groups. However it all went down, it is a milestone in the fan translation community that the entire series in now available in English though! :)

Great to hear there's substantial progress on Tenshi no Uta! I checked that game in Japanese a while ago. Even though my skills are rather mediocre, I kinda got the gist of the story - knowing the manga helps a lot. Haven't played it through though, since the language barrier was too much to handle. Can't wait to play it in English. I really liked the stylized cutscenes, and the battle system wasn't too bad either.

Title: Re: TransCorp Updates!
Post by Nightcrawler on Feb 20th, 2017 at 1:39pm
Yeah, Tenshi is going great. It uses much of the same code and tools as I used on Heracles, so the two projects were often done in parallel the past few years. So, now Tenshi is almost done as well. Unfortunately (for the project), the translator whom will be doing to the bulk of the script editing work is expecting a child in March (Fortunate for her of course). So, I think she will need be away from the project for awhile at that time. She has already been crunched for time with preparation already. We'll see how much she can get done over the next few weeks. No problems on my end. It's mostly down to improvements and some early testing for me now. I've probably spoiled half of the next update now. ;D

Tenshi does have a good story and I think that is probably its main draw. However, the battling has a Parley system so you don't always need to fight random battles. You can instead try to communicate with the monsters using several different languages that can be learned along the way. This results in various outcomes from them simply running away in fear (you still get the experience too!), to getting items and special black coins, befriending them, and other dialog. You have a good assortment of magic, items, and equipment to, so the game doesn't feel too tedious compared to many traditional random battle games.

I'll be sure to let you know when it's ready for group beta testing.

This should be a good year for 16-bit translations if all goes well, with Surging Aura, Tengai Makyou Zero, Ganbare Goemon 2 and possibly Tenshi no Uta on the horizon.  :) Hopefully everything goes as planned!

It looks good Nightcrawler.  What do you plan to do after you release your last game patch?  If anyone deserves to "retire" in terms of romhacking its you.

MariusB, is Surging Aura still being worked on?  I haven't seen anything on it for a while.

Apparently the project has been resumed, judging by what I've read on various forums. I guess it's not that difficult to find a translator for SA, since it's perhaps the only major exclusive, untranslated SMD RPG left (not that many SMD games left to translate in general, too). Well, I hope that this project eventually comes to fruition. As to Tenshi no Uta - I'm sure it's going to be worth the wait as well.  8-)

I haven't retired yet. ;) I still have a few unofficial projects in the tank and several new ideas. No official announcements or promises at this time though. I do have to pick and choose what I do, and how I do it, very carefully. I want to avoid any further multi-year solo ROM hacking projects. That's become a bit unsustainable. I have other endeavors in life to pursue. So, maybe you'll see a joint project, a public project, a non-translation project, a utility, or perhaps another type of project entirely! You'll just have to wait and see! :P

I was thinking that "well, this is Nightcrawler's last announced translation. Now what are you going to do?"

And after checking the project list, I do have to say... you know Nightcrawler there are video games to translate outside of the 1994-1995 period...   ;)

Well, those were by far the two best years for the SNES in my opinion. You have to start somewhere, right? There's still quite a few decent 1994/1995 titles that still need translating! Can't move on until they are finished!  ;D

Agreed! It's a bit of a shame not many hackers seem to work on Genesis RPGs, but then again there aren't that many left in the first place. It's always good to see an occasional Genesis or Game Gear translation patch, still. I quite enjoyed Last Bible S recently, but then again I used to play tons of dungeon crawlers back in the day...
